Starting GLP-1s? 10 Things You Should Know Before Your First Injection

Hey there! If you’re reading this, you’re likely standing at the starting line of a pretty exciting health journey. Whether you’ve been prescribed Semaglutide or Tirzepatide, taking that first step toward metabolic wellness is a big deal. We see so many clients here at Bliss IV Hydration and Concierge Spa who are using these revolutionary GLP-1 medications to reclaim their energy and health, and honestly? We love to see it! 🌟

However, we also know that the first injection can feel a little intimidating. You might have questions about side effects, how to physically do the shot, or how to make sure you’re getting the best results possible. Don't worry: we’ve got your back.

To help you feel confident and prepared, we’ve put together the ultimate "cheat sheet" of 10 essential things you should know before you take that first dose. Let’s dive in!

1. Understand the Science (It’s Not Just "Weight Loss")

Before you start, it helps to know what these meds are actually doing in your body. GLP-1 stands for Glucagon-Like Peptide-1, a hormone your body naturally produces to regulate blood sugar and signal "fullness" to your brain.

When you take a GLP-1 medication, you’re essentially giving your body a louder signal to slow down digestion and quiet that "food noise." It’s a sophisticated metabolic tool, not just a quick fix. If you want to nerd out a bit more on the mechanics, check out our post on GLP-1: The Science Behind the Hype.

2. Timing Your First Dose Strategically

One of the best tips we give our clients is to be smart about when you start. Most people find that the "peak" of any potential side effects (like fatigue or a little nausea) happens about 24 to 48 hours after the injection.

Because of this, we often recommend taking your first dose on a Thursday or Friday evening. This gives you the weekend to rest, hydrate, and see how your body reacts without the pressure of a 9:00 AM Monday morning meeting hanging over your head. Give yourself the grace to have a "slow" weekend if you need it!

Nausea is the most common side effect when starting, but it’s usually manageable! Before your first shot, stock up on:

  • Ginger or Peppermint tea: Great for settling the stomach.

  • Electrolyte powders: To keep your minerals balanced.

  • Alcohol prep pads: Interestingly, sniffing an alcohol pad for a few seconds is a quick "hack" many nurses use to help stop a wave of nausea!

If the nausea feels like too much, it’s a sign to talk to your provider about your dosage or to come see us for some specialized hydration support.

7. Prioritize Protein and "Small Plates"

Since your digestion is slowing down, your stomach will feel full much faster. This means every bite counts! You want to focus on high-quality protein to protect your muscle mass while you lose weight. Think Greek yogurt, lean chicken, tofu, or protein shakes.

Try to avoid heavy, greasy, or high-sugar foods right after your injection. Since your stomach empties slower, that heavy cheeseburger is going to "sit" there much longer than usual, which is a one-way ticket to Heartburn City.

8. The "Altitude Factor" (Breckenridge Special) 🏔️

For our locals and visitors in the High Country, starting a GLP-1 comes with an extra layer of consideration: Altitude Sickness. Both altitude and GLP-1s can cause headaches and fatigue. It can be hard to tell which is which!

If you’re starting your medication while on vacation in the mountains, you’re putting a lot of stress on your system. We highly recommend combining your journey with Oxygen Therapy to help your cells get the energy they need. It makes a world of difference in how you feel day-to-day.

9. Don’t Throw Away Your Shot (Safely!)

This is a practical one: You need a Sharps container. You shouldn't throw used needles into the regular trash. You can buy a red biohazard container at any pharmacy, or in a pinch, use a heavy-duty plastic laundry detergent bottle with a screw-on lid. Just make sure to label it "SHARPS" and look up your local disposal rules. Safety first, friends!

10. Focus on "Non-Scale Victories" (NSVs)

It’s easy to get obsessed with the number on the scale, but GLP-1s do so much more. Pay attention to how your clothes fit, how much more energy you have to hike those mountain trails, or how your skin starts to glow.

Speaking of glowing, many of our clients use this journey as a total wellness reset. If you’re looking to boost that "healthy glow" from the inside out while you’re losing weight, our Beauty Hack IV is the perfect companion to your new lifestyle.
